Mill Road is the long, independent street that runs south east from the centre over the railway, and the streets either side of it are where I send single professionals and couples who want to be in the city without living in a college postcard. It has the best mix of food in Cambridge, independent shops, and a ten minute walk to the station.
The housing is mostly Victorian terraces, many split into flats or let whole as shared houses, with some newer blocks near the station. Gardens are small yards; parking is residents’ permits and tight.
It is a fifteen minute walk to the centre and the colleges, ten minutes to the station, and a fifteen minute cycle to the Biomedical Campus. It is lively, diverse and a bit scruffy in places, which is the point.
