Cambridge is the city with the highest share of overseas arrivals of anywhere I work, and the reason is simple: the university, the Biomedical Campus around Addenbrooke’s, AstraZeneca, Arm and the science parks bring in people from everywhere. It is small, flat, beautiful and expensive, and the people who move here for work almost always cycle.

The expense is the thing to understand first. Rents are closer to outer London than to any northern city, the supply of family houses is thin, and anything good goes within days. That is why the areas I recommend are chosen for commute and realism as much as charm.

The shape of it matters. The centre is the colleges and almost nobody rents there. The ring of Victorian streets around it is where most professionals live. The villages and estates further out are where families go for space, and they are closer than they look because everything is twenty minutes by bike.

I have picked three areas that cover the usual briefs: Mill Road for city living with character, Newnham for families who want the quiet side of the river and a short cycle to the colleges, and Cherry Hinton for people who want a house with a garden and the Biomedical Campus on their doorstep. None of this is a ranking. The figures are from live listings and public data, and the Blueprint works out which one fits you.
