The Jewellery Quarter is the part of the city centre I send people to when they want to walk to work and still feel like they live somewhere with character. It is a conservation area of old workshops and red brick, and much of the housing is converted factories and newer apartment blocks built to match. Almost everything here is a flat.
It is a ten to fifteen minute walk into New Street and Snow Hill station sits on the edge of it, so the commute is as short as Birmingham gets. St Paul’s Square has the bars and restaurants, and it is quieter at night than the Broad Street end of town.
What it is not is a family area. There are few houses, no gardens to speak of, and parking is a question to ask every landlord. For a single professional or a couple on their first year in the city, it is usually the right first stop.

Snow Hill station is on the eastern edge, with trains to Solihull and Worcester. New Street is a fifteen minute walk. The Metro tram runs past the area into the centre and out to Wolverhampton. Driving to the airport or JLR means crossing the city, so check the times on the map rather than assuming.
