Birmingham is the one people underestimate. It is the second biggest city in the country, it has far more going on than its reputation suggests, and for anyone relocating for work it is often the easiest big city to make work on a normal budget. Jaguar Land Rover, HSBC, the hospitals and the universities bring a steady flow of people in, and I have placed plenty of them.
The thing to understand early is that Birmingham is a city of distinct suburbs rather than one centre that fades outwards. Where you land matters more than it does in Manchester. A move from the Jewellery Quarter to Harborne is ten minutes in the car and a completely different way of living.
I have picked three areas that cover the usual briefs: the Jewellery Quarter for city living, Harborne for families who want a village feel with a short commute, and Kings Heath for people who want more house for their money without feeling cut off. None of this is a ranking. The figures are from live listings and public data, and the Blueprint works out which one fits you.
