Wimbledon is the London suburb I suggest most often to families on a corporate move, and the one that most often ends up being where they stay. It has the things people picture when they imagine a good London suburb: a proper high street, the Common on the doorstep, strong schools, and a fast line into Waterloo that makes a central office workable.
It is two places. The town centre around the station is busy, with flats above shops and newer blocks nearby, and it is where you go for the shops, the theatre and the trains. The Village, up the hill, is quieter and more expensive, with the larger houses, the Common and a strip of restaurants and boutiques. Between and around them are streets of Victorian and Edwardian houses that are the heart of the family market.
Family houses are competitive, especially in the summer when people try to move before the school year, and the tennis fortnight brings road closures and crowds for two weeks in June and July.
Who it suits: families and couples who want a house, good schools and a London commute under half an hour, and who are happy to pay for the combination. If you want city living, look at Canary Wharf; if the budget is the deciding factor, look at Walthamstow.

From Matthew
Wimbledon station is one of the best connected in south London. The District line runs straight into the West End and the City, and South Western trains reach Waterloo in around twenty minutes, with Vauxhall on the way for the Victoria line. Trams run east to Croydon and the Thameslink line passes through for Blackfriars and St Pancras. Buses are frequent along the Broadway. By car you are close to the A3 for the south west and Heathrow, but driving into central London is slow and expensive and most families here keep the car for weekends. The journey times on this page are measured from the pin on the map to Bank.
What to check in Wimbledon
- Decide between the town centre and the Village before you view, as the price and the feel are quite different.
- If schools matter, check admissions distances from the exact address; the popular primaries fill from a few streets away.
- Ask about parking: most residential streets are permit only and some houses have none.
- Houses here are mostly older, so check the EPC, the boiler and whether the loft is insulated.
- Ask whether the garden is included in the inventory and who maintains it.
- Streets near the Common and the tennis grounds are affected for two weeks each summer; ask what happens with parking then.
- Confirm whether the house is let furnished or unfurnished; unfurnished is common here.
- Walk the route to the station at the time you would use it; the hill from the Village is steeper than it looks.
