The Harbourside is the stretch of the old docks west of the city centre that was rebuilt from the late 1990s onwards, and it is where I send people who want to walk to work, eat out on the water and have the city centre on their doorstep. It is almost entirely flats, mostly in blocks built since 2000, with a few conversions in the older warehouses.
Temple Meads is a twenty minute walk or a short bus ride along the water, and the city centre offices, the hospitals and the universities are all within half an hour on foot. For someone on a first year in Bristol it is the easiest place to start.
What it is not is quiet or cheap. Weekend nights are lively, the newer blocks have high service charges, and parking is scarce and expensive. Ask every landlord about it before you ask anything else.

From Matthew
Temple Meads is a twenty minute walk east along the harbour. Buses run from the Centre to everywhere, including the airport. By car the M32 is ten minutes away in the right traffic, and the airport is thirty to forty minutes south. Driving to Aztec West or Southmead means crossing the city, so check the times on the map rather than assuming.
What to check in Harbourside
- Ask about parking before anything else; most blocks have none or charge for it.
- Check the service charge and whether bills are included.
- Ask which side of the building the bedroom faces; the water side is the noisy side at weekends.
- Ask which floor it is on and whether there is a lift.
- Walk the route to Temple Meads at night.
