Bristol is the one city on this list that I would describe as a lifestyle move as much as a job move. People come for the aerospace and engineering employers, the hospitals, the universities and a tech scene that is bigger than most people realise, and they stay because it is a city with hills, a harbour, independent everything and the countryside twenty minutes away.
The thing to understand early is that it is expensive, and the gap between the areas is bigger than in the northern cities. Clifton and the streets around it cost what you would expect in a good part of London. Ten minutes south of the river you get a different price for a similar house.
I have picked three areas that cover the usual briefs: the Harbourside for city living on the water, Redland for families who want good schools and a short walk to the Downs, and Southville for people who want more for their money and a high street with a bit of life. None of this is a ranking. The figures are from live listings and public data, and the Blueprint works out which one fits you.
