Allerton is the family suburb in south Liverpool that I recommend most often. It is four miles from the centre, it has Allerton Road as a proper high street with cafes, restaurants and the shops you actually need, and it is bordered by Calderstones Park and Sefton Park, which are two of the best city parks in the country.
The housing is a mix of big Victorian and Edwardian semis and detached houses on the leafy roads, 1930s semis further out, and a good number of flats in converted houses. Gardens are normal and driveways are common on the later streets.
Schools are the reason most families pick it, and the popular ones have tight catchments, so check the exact address.
It is noticeably cheaper than the equivalent suburb in Manchester, which is often the thing that makes a Liverpool move work for a family on a fixed budget.
