Didsbury is the area I get asked about most, and for good reason. It has a proper village centre, Fletcher Moss and the river at the bottom of the hill, and three tram stops along its length, so you can be car free and still get into town without thinking about it.
It is really three places. The Village is the busiest, with the shops and restaurants on Wilmslow Road. West Didsbury, around Burton Road, is the bar and brunch end and the one that gets the most attention. East Didsbury is quieter and more residential, with the train station and Parrs Wood for the bigger shops.
The housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian: terraces, semis and converted flats, with purpose built blocks along the main roads. Family houses are the hard part. They rarely stay on the market long and you will usually be one of several applicants, so if a house is what you need, be ready to decide at the viewing. Flats are far easier to find.
Who it suits: people who want a village feel with a direct tram into the centre, families settling for a few years, and anyone who likes being able to walk to everything. If your work is north or east of the city, or budget is the deciding factor, it is worth looking at the other areas here first.

The tram is the main way in. Didsbury Village, West Didsbury and East Didsbury stops are all on the same line, which runs straight to St Peter's Square and on through the city centre. East Didsbury also has a train station with direct services to Piccadilly, and a park and ride at the tram terminus. Frequent buses run along Wilmslow Road. By car you are close to the M60 and Kingsway, which makes Stockport, the airport and the motorway network easy, but the run into the centre at peak times is slow and parking in town is expensive. The journey times on this page are measured from the pin on the map to St Peter's Square, so add your own walk to the stop.
What to check in Didsbury
- Decide which Didsbury you want first: the Village, West (Burton Road) and East (Parrs Wood) feel different and use different stops.
- Walk the route to your tram stop at the time you would actually use it, not just on a map.
- Houses go quickly, so have your documents, references and deposit ready before you view.
- Parking on the older streets is tight and often permit only; ask what comes with the property.
- Streets near the Mersey can sit in a flood zone; check the Environment Agency map for the exact address.
- If schools matter, check admissions distance from the exact address; popular primaries here fill from very close by.
- Flats on Wilmslow Road or Burton Road are lively at weekends; view on a Friday evening if noise matters.
- Older houses vary a lot on insulation, so check the EPC before you commit.
