Jesmond is the suburb everybody in Newcastle has heard of, and it earns it. It is a mile north of the centre, it has Osborne Road and Acorn Road for cafes, restaurants and the shops you actually need, it has Jesmond Dene running down its eastern side, and it is a fifteen minute walk from the universities and the RVI. It is where most of the people I place at the hospitals and the universities ask to look first.

The housing is mostly big Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many of them split into flats, with the larger family houses on the quieter streets towards the Dene and West Jesmond. Gardens are normal, driveways rare.

Two things to know. It has a lot of students, concentrated on certain streets, so ask who lives on the street before you sign. And it is the most expensive part of the city, though a long way below the equivalent suburb in Leeds or Manchester.
