Newcastle is the city that wins people over on the first weekend. It is compact, it has a waterfront with seven bridges, it has the best night out in the North and it has a coastline twenty minutes away on the Metro. The people I place here come for the two universities, the hospitals, the civil service and the big employers on the business parks to the north and east, and more of them stay than almost anywhere else I work.

It is also one of the cheaper big cities to rent in, which is why the usual trade-offs are softer here. You can live somewhere nice, walk or Metro to work and still have money left at the end of the month.

The shape of it matters. The centre and the Quayside are where the flats are. Jesmond, just north, is the suburb everybody has heard of and prices accordingly. Heaton, to the east, is the one people find once they have been here a few months.

I have picked three areas that cover the usual briefs: Ouseburn for city living with character, Jesmond for families and anyone who wants the postcode, and Heaton for people who want a house and a garden without paying for the name. None of this is a ranking. The figures are from live listings and public data, and the Blueprint works out which one fits you.
