Kelham Island is the old industrial quarter just north of the city centre, and in the last decade it has become the place people mean when they talk about Sheffield having changed. It is a mix of converted mills, new apartment blocks, breweries, food halls and independent businesses, and it is where I send single professionals and couples who want to walk to work and be somewhere with a bit of life.
Almost everything here is a flat, most of it built or converted since 2010. Quality varies between developments, so the name of the building matters more than the street.
It is a fifteen minute walk to the station and the city centre, and the universities and the Hallamshire are twenty to thirty minutes on foot or a short tram ride.
It is lively at weekends, parking is tight, and there are few houses and no gardens. For a first year in Sheffield it is usually the right first stop.

Sheffield station is a fifteen minute walk through the centre. Shalesmoor tram stop is on the edge of the area for the universities and the Hallamshire side of town. By car the inner ring road is on the doorstep, so Meadowhall, the M1 and the AMRC are easier from here than from the south west of the city.
