Nether Edge is the family suburb I recommend most often in Sheffield. It is two miles south west of the centre on the way up to the Peak, it has a small village centre with cafes and a good Sunday market, and it is next to Ecclesall Road for the bigger shops and restaurants. It is leafy, hilly and quiet, and it is where a lot of the people I place at the universities and the Hallamshire end up.
The housing is mostly big Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, many of them stone, with gardens as standard and driveways on some of the later streets. A fair number of the larger houses are split into flats, which keeps the area mixed.
Schools are the reason many families choose it, and the popular ones have tight catchments, so check the exact address.
It is one of the more expensive parts of the city, though still a long way below the equivalent suburb in Leeds or Manchester.

From Matthew
There is no station, so it is buses along Abbeydale Road and Ecclesall Road into the centre in around fifteen minutes, or the bike. By car the centre is ten minutes outside the peaks, the Hallamshire and the university are five to ten, and the Peak District is fifteen minutes the other way. The AMRC and the M1 are the far side of the city.

- Walk the streets; the hills are steep and matter with a pushchair.
