Acomb is the value option of the three and the one I show to anyone whose budget does not stretch to the river. It is two and a half miles west of the centre across the railway, it has Front Street as a proper high street with the shops you actually need, and it has a settled, friendly feel that people warm to once they have lived there a few months.
The housing is mostly 1930s semis and later estates, with gardens and driveways as standard, plus some Victorian terraces nearer the city. Houses are the market here; flats are rarer. You get noticeably more for your money than in Fulford or inside the walls for a similar house.
The trade-off is that it is the far side of the city from the university and the hospital, so check the commute for your actual job rather than for the centre.
