York is the city I recommend to people who want a smaller life without giving up a career. It is a walled medieval city of two hundred thousand people, with a university, a big hospital, the railway, a lot of public sector and insurance jobs, and Leeds twenty five minutes away by train for everything it does not have itself. I have placed people here for years and the ones who choose it tend to choose it on purpose.
The thing to understand first is that it is small. Almost everywhere worth living is within three miles of the Minster, and the difference between areas is about character and price rather than commute. It is also one of the most expensive cities in the North, because a lot of people want to live here and it does not build much.
The shape of it matters. Inside the walls is flats and a few streets of houses. The south of the city along the river is where the university families are. The west, across the railway, is where you get a house and a garden at a normal price.
I have picked three areas that cover the usual briefs: the city centre for city living inside the walls, Fulford for families who want the schools, the river and the university on their doorstep, and Acomb for people who want more house for their money and a short bus ride in. None of this is a ranking. The figures are from live listings and public data, and the Blueprint works out which one fits you.
