Living inside the walls is the thing people move to York for, and the streets around Walmgate and Fossgate on the east side are where I send single professionals and couples who want it. It is quieter and more local than the tourist end around the Shambles, it has some of the best pubs and restaurants in the city, and everything is on foot.

The housing is mostly flats, in converted warehouses and Georgian buildings, in newer blocks along the Foss, and above shops. There are a few streets of small terraced houses on the edge of the walls. Gardens are rare; parking is residents’ permits and very tight, and most people here do not run a car.

It is a fifteen minute walk to the station, fifteen to the hospital, and twenty five minutes to the university by bike. It is lively at weekends, and the race weekends are their own thing, so ask which side of the building the bedroom is on.

What to check in City centre

  • Ask about parking before anything else; most buildings have none and permits are limited.
  • Ask which floor it is on and whether there is a lift.
  • Check the service charge on conversions and newer blocks.
  • Walk the street on a Saturday night and on a race day.
  • Ask about flooding history on anything near the Foss or the Ouse.
