Oxford is the other university city, and for relocation it behaves very like Cambridge: a high share of overseas arrivals, the university and the hospitals as the big employers, a growing science and tech scene out towards Harwell and the science parks, and rents that are closer to London than to anywhere in the North. The people I place here are academics, doctors, researchers and increasingly engineers, and most of them cycle.

The expense is the thing to understand first. Family houses are scarce and go fast, and the city is small enough that the areas worth knowing are all within three miles of the centre.

The shape of it matters. North Oxford is the leafy, expensive side where the university families live. East Oxford across Magdalen Bridge is younger, cheaper and more mixed. The hospitals are up the hill in Headington, so the commute for a doctor is a different question from the commute for a college.

I have picked three areas that cover the usual briefs: Jericho for city living with character, Summertown for families who want the schools and a village high street, and Cowley for people who want a house and a garden at an Oxford price that is still sensible. None of this is a ranking. The figures are from live listings and public data, and the Blueprint works out which one fits you.
